Breeding cats: choose the breeder

The breeds selected by the man are continuously improved by the breeders who try to fix and to exalt the most excellent characteristics of the race, by creating cats which combine the beauty and the singularity with a health and a physical form essential to their welfare.

If one decides to have a kitten, it is recommended to address a breeder, knowing that it is also possible to call associations felines and clubs of the race to obtain clarifications.

It is important to meet breeders who work passionately to obtain kittens whose morphological and character qualities are specific to the breed. It is only by addressing qualified farms that we avoid the risk of buying a kitten with only a few real attributes of the breed, often unknown to the general public. It is recommended to visit some feline shows before taking the plunge, in order to form a very precise idea of the breed standard of the cat you want to buy.

Ensure the excellent behavior of the breeding
The next step will be to contact the breeders and go on site to see where and how cats are kept. A warm and clean environment, vaccination cards properly completed by the veterinarian, samples attesting to the absence of contagious viruses – such as viral leukemia, infectious peritonitis, and acquired immunodeficiency – and the particular implementation of therapies and Antiparasitic prophylaxis may already provide excellent guarantees on kittens’ health status.

The farm must also provide a spotless room with tiled floors and walls, and washable plastic beds with disposable duvets where cats can give birth and breastfeed.

Regarding the specificity of the breed, the pedigree is a help. It is a document attesting to the origin of the cat, which specifies his family tree and the possible titles and prices obtained over two or four previous generations.

If the breeders have a breeding affix, the pedigree certificate will mention the name of the cat and its ancestors, preceded or followed by the name of the breeding of origin. If you own a female and you want her to mate with a breeding male, commonly called stallion, for the sole pleasure of having a litter, the advice of the breeder will be precious to choose the male best suited to improving the characters of the breed.

At the right time, we will bring the cat to the farm, as well as the medical certificates attesting to his good health, the vaccination record, and the pedigree. She will be left for a few days in the facility so that she can socialize with the selected male, and mate several times to ensure the success of the business.
