Providing goldfish

To fall right at home with the door, a fishbowl is not a suitable stay for the goldfish. Not only is the bowl too small in surface area, but too little water comes into contact with air. This allows the goldfish to exchange less oxygen. In addition, it is almost impossible to hang a filter in a small fishbowl. How does it work if you want to keep goldfish inside? A suitable stay for the standard goldfish is an aquarium of at least 100 centimeters long, only in this stay, the fish cannot reach its full size. The bigger the aquarium, the better! In addition, this beautiful freshwater fish produces a lot of waste and the water quality is better preserved with a large aquarium. Are the goldfish too big for their stay? Even then you will have to take care of a bigger aquarium or you can build a pond. The veil usually stays somewhat smaller than the standard goldfish and can handle a smaller aquarium at first. But small fish are also big and the stay needs to be adjusted accordingly. For a pond, at least one part is at least one meter deep. This way the goldfish can also stay outside safely when it freezes.

Then we come to the water quality. For the standard goldfish, the optimum temperature is between 10 and 21 degrees Celsius. In warm water, the fish are more active than in cold water. Is your room temperature reasonably stable? Then you probably do not need a heating element to add to the aquarium. In any case ensure that the temperature does not fluctuate too much, because goldfish cannot tolerate it properly. Search for each goldfish type which temperature is optimal to make them as pleasant as possible. What should not be missing from an aquarium is a filter and lighting. Furthermore, the pH-value, also called acidity, of the water should be between seven and eight and the total hardness comes out between six and sixteen DH. You can fill in the decor and style of your aquarium yourself. However, aquarium pebbles of five to eight millimeters large are recommended for the soil.

It is often thought that aquarium plants are only useful for the oxygen content in the water, but they have a completely different function. Aquarium plants absorb waste products as food, including the substances nitrate and nitrite. In addition, the plants are a good addition to the diet of the goldfish. Aquarium plants cannot withstand any water temperature. Therefore, ask your local Animal Specialist which plants are suitable for your aquarium and fish. In addition to water plants, goldfish like to have similar cats around them. Keep in mind the different types that you put together. Veiled goldfish swimming a lot slower than the big goldfish species and the presence of other busy fish can cause stress.

It takes a while before the difference can be seen between a male and a female, this is only possible when the goldfish are sexually mature. This is usually at an age of about two years. An aquarium can be paired in any season, in a pond only in late spring and summer. During the mating season, the female has a fuller belly and the males have spawning, white spots on the gill covers and occasionally on the pectoral fins.
